William Asp

William is a citizen of the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council and a member of the Wolf Clan.  His mother is Frances Woolsey.  His grandmother was Amy Cletheroe and his great grandparents were Jenny and Billy Lebarge.   William was born and raised in Whitehorse.
When Ta’an Kwäch’än Council filed their land claims on behalf of the inherent rights of the Lake Leberge Indians, William was on the negotiating team.  William has always been an advocate for all the people and has ensured that their interests were heard throughout the negotiation process.
Through many years of negotiating on behalf of the rights of his people, William consistently consulted with Elders and others to ensure that the rights to and interests in the land were respected.    His own extensive knowledge of the land, culture and history ensured that the Final Agreement that was signed by the Canadian Government, the Yukon Government and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council reflected direction from the Elders and the descendants of Chief Jim Boss.  After the agreements were signed, William filled the role of Implementation Manager, ensuring the spirit and intent of the TKC agreements were incorporated by all parties to the agreements.
William is also an active member of the Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board, the Salmon Sub-Committee and the Forestry Focus Group.  He has served as Chair of the Lebarge Renewable Resource Council and the Settlement Lands Committee.  With his extensive knowledge of the Umbrella, Final and Self-Government Agreements, William brings a wealth of knowledge to the Boards and Committees on which he serves.
