Nancy Houston

Nancy Lou was born in Dawson City, raised in both Dawson City and Whitehorse.

She is the grand-daughter of T.A. and Delia Firth, one of the pioneer families of 1898. Nancy attended Christ the King High School in Whitehorse and graduated from St. Ann's Academy in Victoria. Nancy attended the University of Victoria where she studied Archeology, Linguistics and Canadian History. She lived for 16 years in British Columbia before returning home with her husband David in 1984.

Nancy joined the City of Whitehorse as Deputy City Clerk and then City Clerk from 1984-1992. In 1992, Nancy started her home-based consulting business “Huston & Associates”, which she continues to operate. From 1995-2007, Nancy co-owned and operated three successful retail businesses: Midnight Sun Gallery & Gifts, the White Horse General Store and Yukon Memories (airport store). Her partnership company sold the businesses in July of 2007.

Nancy has been a volunteer Board member and President of the Tourism Industry of Yukon for many years, receiving a Life-time Achievement Award, the Yukon's Ambassador Award and the Yukon Award during her tenure. She served five years as Yukon's Industry Representative on the Canadian Tourism Commission. Since then, Nancy has been involved in maintaining properties that her and her husband own. She has just recently been appointed by the Federal Government as one of the Chairpersons of Yukon's Employment Insurance Appeal Board.

Her love of Yukon Heritage stems from her parents' and grandparents' stories, accounts of Yukoners during the goldrush, and stories of the 1940's to 1960's period in Dawson City, and continues with her own living memories of Whitehorse, Dawson, and Marsh Lake
